Great Little Article on BI Infancy
Rob Preston’s little article on BI infancy is fantastic quick read on the state of BI in the real-world (forget all the cute things you hear from BI vendors), with pointers to some excellent studies and other articles. I love the quote from Randy Mott, HP’s CIO (they got a huge DW): “There was no lack of data. But there was a lack of consistent, timely data spanning different parts of the business.” Keywords: Timely and Consistent – how true! And that comes from a place that more than likely spent millions on their BI infrastructure.
Kinda shows us tech folks what’s really important here – giving the business timeline and consistent information so they can make truly intelligence decisions – after all, isn’t that what acronyms like BI and DSS stand for?! That’s why I’ve always admired our philosophy and our little slogan of “giving intelligence back to the business” – pretty much falls in line with the article, I think. Our goal as technology partners should be to partner with the business – technology doesn’t own the warehouse, it makes it useful and reliable for the business, the true owner.
OK, end of rant.
Read the article and the links in it – good stuff.
